Why do we need you?

Volunteers are vital to ERIC - we couldn’t do what we do without you. Volunteers come from all walks of life, some of whom have personal experience of the issues we are trying to address. We need your expertise and experience but more importantly your motivation and enthusiasm!

How could you help?

You could help with tasks from packing leaflets to data analysis or supporting our professional trainers and helpline staff. In return, you will get the opportunity to work with a great team, develop your own skills, learn new ones and make a real difference to the lives of children, young people and their families.

Why volunteers are so important

Volunteers are vital to ERIC. We don’t receive any government funding so rely on charitable donations and
fundraising to support our aims. Volunteers help us to develop our work even further.

You come from all walks of life and some of you have personal experience of the issues we are trying to address. You bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the charity and, most important of all, enthusiasm and motivation. We offer a wide range of roles from admin tasks, such as packing leaflets, to helping our professional trainers at events and supporting the work of the helpline team.

We also welcome expertise in areas such as data analysis, PR, communications and social media. We are also keen to encourage anyone who wants to fundraise for us.

It could be through a challenge such as running a half marathon or something as simple as a loose change collection.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering for ERIC will give you the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of children, young people and their families. You will be part of a well-respected national charity and will be included as part of the team thus giving you the opportunity to influence our future policies.

You will be working with a great team of dedicated and friendly people and will have the
opportunity to develop your own skills and learn new ones. Several of our volunteers have used
the work skills they acquired at ERIC to find their first permanent job while others in semiretirement have enjoyed using the expertise
gained during their careers.

How to get involved

If you want to make a difference to children, young people and their families and can give a regular commitment of your time and expertise, we would love to hear from you.

Opportunities are advertised on our website but we also welcome direct contact through our website or social media platforms from anyone who may be able to contribute to our work. We conduct short informal interviews with potential volunteers and ask you to provide at least two referees.

We are committed to ensuring that all staff, volunteers and trustees working at ERIC are suitable to work with children and vulnerable adults. All volunteers who have contact with children or vulnerable adults are required to have an enhanced DBS check. Any references provided are followed up and checked with the referees.

Getting started

Once you join ERIC we will make sure you feel part of the team. You will be assigned a staff contact who manages the area of work in which you volunteer and you will be given an outline of your role. You will have a full induction into the work of the charity and we will provide you with all the information you need to fulfil your role.

We will set out our expectations of you such as adhering to our policies and guidelines.

Training and support

During your time with ERIC we will provide appropriate training and support to enable you to make the most of your volunteering opportunity. This will include providing the information and tools to carry out your duties for us as well as helping you to develop your professional skills and expertise.

Equal opportunities and diversity

ERIC is committed to equal opportunities and diversity. This is reflected in all our policies and practices and applies equally to volunteers and employees.

Health and safety

ERIC is committed to ensuring your wellbeing and safety while volunteering with us and we expect you to contribute to maintaining a safe working environment by following our health and safety policy. You should also follow the policies of any other organisation whose premises you may be working on as part of your role with ERIC.

Data protection/confidentiality

We take great care to protect your information as part of our responsibilities under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 2018. Volunteers have the right to request to see all the information held about them by ERIC. We also expect you to protect any personal or confidential information you may have access to as part of your volunteering.

ERIC provides Employers Liability, Public Liability and Professional Indemnity cover for all volunteers whilst working on the charity’s activities. We do not provide motor insurance cover, nor do we cover your personal belongings. Driving in connection with charitable volunteering is normally part of your standard cover but we recommend that you check with your insurance company.

Volunteers may request reimbursement of reasonable out of pocket expenses such as travel costs while representing ERIC. Payment of reasonable expenses must be authorised by your staff contact in advance and receipts will be required.

Resolving problems

We hope that your time with ERIC is enjoyable and beneficial, but we appreciate there may be times when you have concerns. If you have any problems while volunteering with us, please talk to your staff contact so that we can resolve difficulties as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about another volunteer or member of staff, please let your staff contact or the CEO know immediately.

Moving on

Volunteers are free to leave ERIC at any time, but we would welcome reasonable notice to arrange an effective handover and make alternative arrangements. We may sometimes need to end a volunteering role for various reasons but will give you the opportunity to give us feedback on your experiences and help you to move onto other roles if possible.
