ERIC volunteer at Buckingham palaceJulia and her daughter Katie outside Buckingham Palace

National Volunteers' Week (1-7 June) happily coincided with an invitation for two ERIC team members and their guest to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on Thursday 1 June.

As a thank you for the amazing work she does for ERIC as a volunteer, Julia attended this special event with her daughter Katie. They were joined by Jayne and Diane who both work in the sales team. It was a very fitting way to mark Julia’s five years as a dedicated volunteer helping out in ERIC’s training department.

Recognising and rewarding public service

Over the course of each year, The Queen welcomes over 30,000 guests to spend a relaxed summer afternoon in the beautiful gardens of Buckingham Palace or the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Garden Parties are an important way for The Queen to speak to a broad range of people from all walks of life, all of whom have made a positive impact in their community.

Julia said: “It was really amazing being given the opportunity to attend a Royal Garden Party, something I never imagined I would do. The day was a wonderful experience, the sun shone non-stop, bands played and there were thousands of people wearing their best outfits, uniform or national dress and all enjoying the beautiful gardens and traditional afternoon tea. All very colourful but over too quickly!”

Julia started volunteering for ERIC in May 2012 and works two days a week alongside Jackie, the Learning & Development Manager, helping to organise training seminars. Jackie says: "Julia is an incredibly valued member of the ERIC team. She's always reliable, flexible and happy to help with anything she can. She gives so much of her time, not only to ERIC but also to other great causes like St Peter's Hospice and the Girl Guides. We are incredibly lucky to have her on board."
