Health Conditions in Schools AllianceERIC is a member of the Health Conditions in Schools Alliance: a campaigning coalition of over 30 organisations, including charities, healthcare professionals and trade unions who work together to make sure children with health conditions get the care they need in school.

Previous campaigning

In 2014, the Alliance, supported by many parents, successfully campaigned to get the Government to amend the Children and Families Act 2014 to include a duty on schools in England to support children with health conditions, including children with continence problems.

The duty is accompanied by statutory guidance from the Department of Education which schools in England must follow.

Find out more about schools' duties to support children with medical conditions.

Current campaigning

The Alliance is currently campaigning to ensure all schools have medical conditions policies.

Freedom of Information requests carried out by the Alliance in 2016 found that the majority of schools contacted could not demonstrate they had a medical conditions policy in line with statutory guidance.

The Alliance continues to campaign for the Government to ensure all schools support children with medical conditions. For details of the Alliance's current campaigning work, please visit the Health Conditions in Schools Alliance website

Resources for schools

The Alliance's website offers guidance and tools to schools who have pupils with health conditions. You can download a template medical conditions policy, a sample individual healthcare plan and advice on what the plan should contain, guidance on the legal situation across the UK and a process for making sure children who require education in different settings get the support they need.
