By working with settings across the Early Years Foundations stage, ERIC aims to help children achieve independence in using the toilet before they start school.

Being toilet trained is a key skill that children need to develop independence, self-esteem and confidence and to thrive at school.

We want every family to access information on potty training and good bladder and bowel health by the time their child is two. Early years settings have a crucial role to play in early intervention towards promoting good bowel and bladder health for life.

Potty Training Policy for Early Years settings

ERIC and National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) have developed a potty training policy for Early Years settings to support effective toilet training. This has been reviewed by the nursery sector.

“I am so impressed with the potty training policy package and am going to start implementing it straight away. It’s such a sound and relatable document.” Leanne, Nursery Deputy Manager, Bristol.

The potty training package also includes an easy to follow flowchart, assessment forms and charts, factsheets and a supply of ERIC’s information guides.

“The information in the policy is great. Whilst we have a policy it is quite short and limited in detail e.g. bring spare clothes etc...All the information in this package about bowel and bladder health is so beneficial and will help practitioners when talking to parents about toilet training - it's a very misunderstood subject.” Nicky, Nursery Teacher, Bath.
