Make your own Poo Checker cake

ERIC's Poo cartoon character holding a wooden spoon

Not only is our Poo Checker cake delicious, it’s educational too! Each type of poo on the Stool Scale is represented by a different chocolate bar on the cake.

Ingredients

For the chocolate cake: We used Mary Berry’s chocolate cake recipe, but any simple chocolate cake recipe will do.

3 large eggs

175g (6 oz) self-raising flour

175g (6 oz) caster sugar

175g (6 oz) softened butter

1½ level tsp baking powder

40g (1½ oz) cocoa powder

4 tbsp boiling water

For the ganache:
We used shop-bought chocolate ganache, but you could make your own.

150ml (5fl oz) double cream

150g (5oz) plain chocolate, broken into pieces

Bristol stool scale ingredients

For the ‘stools’: We recommend the following chocolate bars, but you could experiment with others.

Type 1 – Maltesers

Type 2 – Rice Crispies and Dairy Milk

Type 3 – Mars bar

Type 4 – Slightly melted and squashed Mars Bar

Type 5 – Cadbury Flake

Type 6 – Melted Double Decker

Type 7 – Melted Dairy Milk

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C, gas 4.
  2. Grease and line a large baking tin (preferably square or rectangular).
  3. Beat together the eggs, flour, caster sugar, butter and baking powder until smooth in a large bowl.
  4. Put the cocoa in a separate bowl. Add the water to the cocoa a little at a time to make a stiff paste. Add to the cake mixture.
  5. Turn into the prepared tin, level the top and bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 mins, or until shrinking away from the sides of the tin and springy to the touch.
  6. Leave to cool in the tin, then turn on to a wire rack to cool completely before putting on the ganache.
  7. To make the ganache (if you haven’t bought a ready-made one): measure the cream and chocolate into a bowl and carefully melt over a pan of hot water over a low heat, or gently in the microwave for 1 min (600w microwave). Stir until melted, then set aside to cool a little and to thicken up.
  8. Spread the ganache on the cake with a pallet knife or spoon.

To create the stools:

Type 5 – Cut the Flake into 2cm chunks and place these in a pile.

Warning! – Unwrap all chocolate bars before putting them in the microwave as they may explode if wrapped.

Type 1 – Place about 7-10 Maltesers in a little pile.

Type 2 – Melt half the bar of Dairy Milk in a bowl in the microwave and mix with a handful of Rice Crispies.

Type 3 – Cut the Mars Bar in half and place one half on the cake.

Type 4 (the ideal stool) – Melt the other half of the Mars Bar in the microwave for a few seconds and shape it into a sausage.

Type 5 – Cut the Flake into 2cm chunks and place these in a pile.

Type 6 – Melt the Double Decker in the microwave for a few seconds and squish it around in a bowl.

Type 7 – Melt the other half of the Dairy Milk and create a puddle effect.

To number the stools you can either use icing for writing or paper numbers on toothpicks as we did. Give your cake a title with either the icing or toothpick method.

Voilà. Your Bristol Stool Form Scale Cake is done. You can now impress your colleagues, kids and friends with your baking skills and continence knowledge!
