Potty Training Poem
Potty Training
‘Happy Birthday darling
Today you’re 2 years old.
Time to think of wearing knickers,
Banish nappies, you’re too old!
We’ll do it through the summer
So in the garden, you can play.
Then if you have an accident,
‘It doesn’t matter’ I will say.
I don’t know if you’re ready,
As I’ve seen no special signs
But everyone starts at 2 years old,
I was told by a friend of mine’.
So we went to do some shopping,
To buy some knickers, a potty too.
She chose some purple knickers
And her potty was nice bright blue.
And so one summers morning
We placed her nappy in the bin.
On went her purple knickers,
The potty training did begin!
She wasn’t very good at first,
Just stood and wee’d upon the floor,
She also wee’d upon the carpet,
And in the car….oh how much more?
Many times out in the garden
She filled her shoes up to the brim,
So I had to buy some new ones.
Now my patience was wearing thin!
She loved her bright blue potty…
If she could use it as a hat,
Or roll it round the kitchen floor
And spin it on the mat!
Now and then she put her bottom on,
And once or twice produced a wee,
It was more by luck than judgement,
But she couldn’t wait for me to see!
Gradually things got better
And she wee’d more on her pot,
But it took weeks and weeks of trying.
Had she been ready? ... Maybe not!
Next time (if there is one!)
I’ll be more patient, wait for signs,
Wait for lots of ‘still dry’ nappies
Make it her decision – not mine!
So when you think you're ready
For that ‘potty training’ time.
Be guided by your toddler,
When they’re ready… you’ll be fine!
